Union's Catherine Infantino wins the U.S. National Title in the LW 1x

Congratulations to Catherine Infantino on her victory in the Lightweight Women's Single at the USRowing ("Elite") National Championship. Catherine reached the final with a perfectly executed sprint to victory in the last 500 meters of her heat. In the hard fought final Catherine held off strong challenges from two of her competitors to cross the line first and bring home the Gold. Catherine's victory also earns her the 2008 National Title for the LW1x. Well done Catherine!

UBC/Groton Fives Clinic and Matches

Solidifying a rivalry that goes back to WWII, a handful of UBC Fives players made their presence felt once again on the great Groton Fives courts during matches held on an early spring afternoon. John Hartley, Greg Saunders, Marvin Klein and Nick Elfner participated in a clinic for several young Groton Fives players who occasionally showed the UBC players a thing or two about their English-style courts especially when it came to scoring and serving the game.

Unlike prior visits in the 1980s, the potent UBC squad was content to share sandwiches and sodas following the matches rather than shoot off a Howitzer across the Groton circle declaring their victory for all to hear. Accordingly, the UBC and Groton have agreed in principle to co-host more clinics and matches on their courts (two doubles, two singles) in the future. Several young Groton players and alums expressed interest in visiting the UBC to play on our squash-style singles court.

Spring/Summer Rowing Results

The 2007 Rowing Season is off to a strong start. As we approach the middle of the Spring/Summer racing season, the Club has already participated in a number of Regattas and produced several strong finishes. The season started with a small group of rowers traveling to Philadelphia for the Schuylkill Navy Regatta and bringing home a couple of close second place finishes. Some highlights from the season to date include three first place finishes at the Cromwell Cup in Boston (including convincing victories by the Open 8+ and by Mike Cataldo in his single), two first place finishes at the Festival Regatta in Lowell, and a number of close 2nd and 3rd place finishes. We also managed to have a little fun participating in the Open/Mixed 8+ at the Cromwell Cup. Congratulations to all who have raced this past spring and summer, thanks to all of those who helped with regatta logistics, and, of course thanks to Coach Bohrer.

A list of recent results can be found here.

Looking ahead, members of the Club will be participating in a number of additional regattas this summer. Tom’s Junior Camp will be racing at the Philadelphia Youth Regatta and U.S. Nationals. Other UBC rowers are planning to attend the Diamond State Regatta in Delaware, The Quaker City Regatta in Philadelphia, the Blackburn Challenge and U.S. Nationals. Additional results will be posted here over the next few weeks.

13 February 2007, Gov. Keyes Indoor Club Regatta

Fellow UBC members-

First, a special thanks to all of those who participated in and helped to organize the 2007 Gov Keyes ergometer race. This year, 30 people chose to brave the approaching weather and the approach of Valentine's Day to pull a 500 meter piece- a test of strength, skill, and a dash of stamina (but only a dash.) This represents a 15-fold increase from last year. Next year, we hope to do even better!

With the new format, age handicaps, and approximately double the number of people we were originally expecting, we have added some new rules on the fly to encourage participation. The most significant of note is that you can only win one individual category (i.e. the same person cannot win both the age handicapped and the open race for male rowers).

A spreadsheet detailing everyone's finish, in both seconds and adjusted seconds for age is posted here (feel free to call if you have questions about the official USRA formula which can be found at http://www.usrowing.org/uploads/docs/mhandchart.pdf).

Here is a summary:
Open Men's Rower- J. Besser 1.21.6
Age Handicap Men's Rower- Dan Debonis 1:22(adjusted)

Open Men's Non-Rower- A.Hanser 1:36.0
Age Handicap Men's Non-Rower- J. Hemenway 1:34.35(adjusted)

Open Female Rower- K. O’ Brien 1:38.1
Age Handicap Female Rower- T. Dolan 1:41.8(adjusted)

Open Relay- K. O'Brien, S. Mckiernan, C. Hein 5:09.5
Handicap Relay- M. Parker, R. Mannino, P. Chang 5:34.4

We considered adding a "might not have rowed in 5 years category" which would have been won by Matt Emans. This is under consideration.
Another category might have been "courage in the face of never having been on an ergometer before." This will be an official category next year, and Jamie McIntyre will receive his honorable mention at that point.

The rowing committee will allow time for an official awards ceremony next year. This year's prizes will be awarded whenever I encounter the winners, and perhaps at a more formal venue.

To summarize, Gov Keyes, our three-time senator and governor of NH would have been proud. Well rowed UBC, and see you next year.
